Dodge City named by travel website as Kansas' most beautiful town

GERALD B. KEANE

A travel website has named Dodge City – that’s right, Dodge City – as the most beautiful town in Kansas.

As The Wichita Eagle reports, travel website Culture Trip, which names places around the globe that people should travel to, released its list of “The Most Beautiful Towns to Visit in Each U.S. State” last week, and Dodge City was its pick for Kansas because “This town, once known as ‘The Wickedest Town in the American West’ is an absolute must-see for any history lover.”

Dodge City is best known among baby boomers and older generations for the television show “Gunsmoke,” which aired on CBS from 1955 to 1975. Its main tourism draws nowadays are Boot Hill and the Boot Hill Casino and Resort.

After applauding Culture Trip’s selection of a western Kansas town, the Wichita Eagle’s Beccy Tanner offered several alternatives to Dodge City, including Atchison, Leavenworth, Scott City, Abilene, Cottonwood Falls, Lawrence, Manhattan and St. Francis.
