Seasoned with Love: 21st Annual Salt & Pepper Luncheon in Amarillo

********DUE TO THE NEED FOR SOCIAL DISTANCING DURING THE COVID-19 OUTBREAK, THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED; STAY TUNED FOR MORE INFO! STAY SAFE AND KEEP THOSE HANDS CLEAN!*******

“Boil a pot of water. Add salt. Add pepper. Taste and eat. This would be a meal many of our senior citizens would have to eat because the income they have will not stretch to pay all the bills, medicine, utilities and housing.  We know this because one of our clients was eating this very meal before she became a member of our program.”  —Joyce Knight, Catholic Charities of the Texas Panhandle

While the subject of poverty, hunger, and food insecurity is indeed very heavy, I feel so light when I get a visit from Joyce Knight of Catholic Charities of the Texas Panhandle  (CCTXP). This week, she stopped by High Plains Morning for a chat to remind us that the 21st Annual Salt & Pepper Luncheon will take place on Thursday, March 19th from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Cathedral (1200 S. Washington) in Amarillo. This event will benefit The InterFaith Hunger Project, which is CCTXP's initiative to ensure that the elderly and disabled community members are not forced to choose between buying food or paying for their life-saving medications.

The event’s featured speaker is Jon Mark Beilue, who spent 37 years at the Amarillo Globe-News before retiring in 2018. For the last 12 years, he served as the newspaper's general columnist where he frequently wrote about social issues and commentary.
