Gospel Roots of Rock & Soul: New Programming for September
"Without gospel music there never would have been an Elvis Presley, a Ray Charles, a James Brown, or an Aretha Franklin." —ANN POWERS, AUTHOR & MUSIC JOURNALIST
Every Saturday evening in September, High Plains Public Radio listeners can tune in for a new radio documentary that explores the history of black gospel music and illustrates its significant influence on the formation of rock and soul music. Hosted by GRAMMY award-winning gospel singer CeCe Winans, Gospel Roots of Rock & Soul will air Saturdays at 6pm CT on HPPR's main signal from Sept. 5th through Sept. 26. It's produced by Philadelphia public radio station WXPN and distributed by NPR. Through in-depth interviews with artists and dozens of songs (including many archival selections), the four-hour documentary illuminates the profound impact that gospel music has made on popular music.
