NW Kansas: Oil Pipeline Construction Begins in August

econintersect.com

An pipeline transporting oil from the Bakken production area of North Dakota and Eastern Montana to Cushing, Oklahoma cuts across Kansas.  A recent article in the Salina Journal said the purpose of the project is to transport domestic oil to domestic refineries.

The sweet crude will be moved across a combination of existing natural gas pipelines and new construction.  The new portion of the pipeline is called the Pony Express Pipeline.  It stretches for 260 miles thru Kansas.  Construction in northwestern Kansas begins in August.  The route passes through the following Kansas counties: Lincoln, Ellsworth, Saline, McPherson, Harvey, Sedgwick, Butler and Cowley.  A map of the project can be found here.

Tall Grass Energy Partners owns the pipeline.  An article on their website says construction will be completed in the Winter, 2013, and in-service by August, 2014.  The 24 inch underground pipeline is expected to transport between 230,000 and 320,000 barrels per day.
