November 1 is the day the Cold Weather Rule goes into effect for Kansans. The Kansas Corporation Commission created the policy to prevents electricity and gas companies from discontinuing service to those who fall behind on winter utility bills according to The Wichita Eagle.
KCC Chairman Mark Sievers said this year marks the 30th year the rule has been in effect. Sievers went onto say the rule “ensures Kansans can keep warm during winter months.”
Details:
- The rule is in effect from Nov. 1 – March 31.
- If you are unable to pay your bill in full, contact utility company, and tell them you want to use the Cold Weather rule.
- You will have to pay 1/12 of the current bill and 1/12 of any debt owed, plus disconnect or reconnect fees.
- The balance of your account will be spread out over the next 11 months.
- The low temperature cannot be above 35 degrees for at least the next 48 hours
