Growing on the High Plains: Strawflowers

When curating one's seasonal planting, most veteran gardeners have their favorites. Time-saving green thumbs often prefer perennials, while those attracted to a regular change of scenery might opt for annuals.

However, many of us believe there's a magic in the mix -- and this year I have enjoyed getting to know the xerochrysum bracteatum. Also known as "strawflowers" and "paper daisies," these decorative dollops fare well in our hot and dry summers on the Plains.

Today's Growing on the High Plains takes a long look at these plants, including their brittle bodies and crisp, wispy "petals." Take a listen and you just might find yourself a new favorite for your patio pots.

Years ago Skip Mancini left the rocky coast of Northern California to return to her roots in the heartland. Her San Francisco friends, concerned over her decision to live in a desolate flatland best known for a Hollywood tornado, were afraid she would wither and die on the vine. With pioneer spirit, Skip planted a garden. She began to learn about growing not only flowers and vegetables, but hearts and minds. If you agree that the prairie is a special place, we think you'll enjoy her weekly sojourns into Growing on the High Plains.
