U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, a two-term Republican senator has 20 competitors for his senate seat. The pack consists of seven Republicans, five Democrats, four independents, three Libertarians, and one Green Party according to a recent article from the Texas Tribune.
On the Republican front:
- Incumbent U.S. Sen. John Cornyn
- U.S. Rep. Steve Stockman
- Curt Cleaver, hotel industry executive
- Ken Cope, an aerospace consultant
- Chris Mapp, owner of a Port O’Connor marine sales business
- Reid Reasor, a computer animation firm owner
- Dwayne Stovall, runs a Cleveland construction and oil field service company
- Linda Vega, a Houston immigration attorney
Stockman has garnered the most attention when he chose to forego re-election and challenge Cornyn.
On the Democratic front:
- David Alameel, a millionaire dentist
- Michael Fjetland, businessman
- Harry Kim a physician
- Kesha Rogers, an anti-Obama political activist
- Maxey Scherr, a lawyer
Alameel has attracted the most attention. He previously ran for Congress in 2013 and spent more than $4,000 per vote to come in fourth. He is backed by state Sen. Wendy Davis.
