The WT graduating class of 2012 entered the job market with better prospects and significantly less student loan debt. The Amarillo Globe-News reported the average WT grad had student loan debt of $19,774 compared to the national average of $29,400.
Dan Garcia is the Vice President for Enrollment Management at WT. He says the reason is the university’s scholarship program. In 2013-2014, WT awarded 2,504 students $4.1 million in scholarships.
Even with student loan debt, college graduates have a significantly lower unemployment rate. In 2012, the rate was 7.7 percent for college graduates. That’s about 10 percent less than those with only a high school diploma according to the Project on Student Debt.
