Growing on the High Plains: Butterfly Garden—Part One

What's not to love about butterflies? As pretty as a flower and quite beneficial to growing garden plants, these welcome buddies deserve a little consideration.

Today's Growing on the High Plains takes flight with the first installment of our look at the curious lives of butterflies. These cold-blooded critters do require certain creature comforts to thrive, and the males don't mind gathering for a slosh of sweetness at the local "puddle club." Learn a bit about these splendid insects and how to harness their attention in your back yard.

Years ago Skip Mancini left the rocky coast of Northern California to return to her roots in the heartland. Her San Francisco friends, concerned over her decision to live in a desolate flatland best known for a Hollywood tornado, were afraid she would wither and die on the vine. With pioneer spirit, Skip planted a garden. She began to learn about growing not only flowers and vegetables, but hearts and minds. If you agree that the prairie is a special place, we think you'll enjoy her weekly sojourns into Growing on the High Plains.
