Amarillo Leaders Approve Bond Election To Decide Fate Of Civic Center

Wikimedia Commons

The Amarillo City Council has unanimously approved a bond that would allow city residents to decide the fate of a proposed $319 million project to expand and renovate the Amarillo Civic Center.

As the Globe-News noted this week, the plan would include a massive overhaul of the huge facility on Buchanan Street in downtown Amarillo.

The plan calls for the building of a new arena, an expansion and renovation of the Convention Center, a relocation of various city services, a new parking garage, a new downtown greenspace called the Central Plaza, and restoration of the downtown Santa Fe Depot.

The Amarillo City Council voted 5-0 in favor of the resolution, which calls for the bond election to be held on May 2, 2020.

While the project will cost a proposed $319 million, the bond will only ask residents to pay $275 million through a 15-cent increase to the property tax rate.
