The Liberty Theater could be getting a chance at a second life reports Channel Four News in Amarillo.
The historic theater was built in 1921. It was the only place African-Americans were welcome.
It’s been vacant for years, but a group of people are working to redevelop the building into a place for artists to perform.
The city currently owns the land around the building. Downtown Amarillo, Inc. is working with them to make this area into a park for various events.
Melissa Dailey is the Executive Director for Downtown Amarillo, Inc. She says it’s “a historic building and historic buildings are so important to downtown and to Amarillo. It tells our history. In this particular case, really the African-American history and also the history of the theaters."
There are only two old theaters left standing downtown. The Liberty and the Paramount.
Downtown Amarillo is also working with High Plains Public Radio on the project. HPPR is interested in the possibility of occupying space adjacent to the theatre for broadcasting and administrative business.
