A federal appeals court has ruled that Texas can enforce Senate Bill 12, which restricts "sexually oriented performances" in front of kids. The judges said drag shows aren't necessarily sexual, and the plaintiffs, including a drag performer and two entertainment companies, may not be harmed by the law.

The ruling comes just weeks after a federal lawsuit was filed in an effort to block the school’s ban on drag shows.

The ruling is a victory for LGBTQ+ rights advocates who have said the law targets drag performers for no real reason.

Lubbock Community Theatre’s executive director Heather May said with so many unknowns regarding the enforcement of the bill, organizations like hers are discussing how to protect themselves and their communities.

The bill bans drag performances that could be perceived as sexual in the presence of minors.

Lawyers for the ACLU of Texas said they believe the law is not only ill-defined but that it also infringes upon the right to freedom of expression.
