The Kansas State Fair celebrated its 100th birthday this year, and after 100 years, the rain legend continues. The superstition is that it will rain during the fair. It may have taken until the last day, but Sunday, the skies opened up, providing a shower with a bit of hail to pepper to all in attendance according to The Wichita Eagle.
Pam and Mike Prescott, from rural Ellinwood, have not missed the state fair in 23 years. They are well aware of the legend.
“Every year during the state fair you are guaranteed it will rain one day. The farmers can plan on it,” Mike Prescott said.
Denny Stoecklein, general manager of the Kansas State Fair, said this centennial year set attendance records. Stoecklein said the fair audit has yet to be completed, so a final attendance number is still days away, but he felt crowds were up.
“With the cooler temperatures this past weekend, what better way to end a birthday celebration?” he said.
And in the midst of drought, rain is the best present possible.
