There are three times as many men officially unemployed now as there were in 1968 reports the New York Times.

Men in their prime working age from 25 to 64 were studied.

Some metro and suburban areas had male employment rates above 90 percent are: Denver, San Francisco, Minneapolis, Boston, Manhattan, and the booming North Dakota oil towns.

The deep South, northern Michigan, the Southwest, and the Northwest had more than 40 percent of prime-age men not working.

County level data from 2009 to 2013 was used in the report.

All out-of-work men are put into the same category regardless of the reason.
