The Army recently revealed it will not expand the 365-square-mile Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site. The Republic reported the announcement is drawing praise from area residents.
Area ranchers said banks have been reluctant to make loans because of the uncertainty of the Army taking their land.
Sen. Mark Udall, D-Colo., has been working on this project for months.
The Army said it will ask the secretary of defense to cancel the permit of expansion.
