Texas Lt. Gov.: More Churches Should Welcome Firearms

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick wants more Texas churches to welcome guns into their sanctuaries, The Texas Tribune reports.

In the wake of a mass shooting in central Texas last month that left 26 people dead, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said he believed that arming worshipers would help prevent similar tragedies.

Late last week Patrick said he wished Paxton would issue an official opinion letting churches know that they have the option of allowing firearms into their services.

In an official news release, Patrick said, “I know many are thankful for the Texan who stopped this attack through the exercise of his Second Amendment rights, but I believe our state laws provide more protection than many Texans realize.”

Under current law, Texans are legally allowed to carry a gun into a church unless there is a sign on the door stating otherwise.
