Texas Rep. Mac Thornberry Votes For Tax Bill, Calls The Measure “A Great Step Forward”

West Texas Republican Rep. Mac Thornberry voted in favor of the massive tax overhaul this week.

As The Amarillo Globe-News reports, the Clarendon native afterward said the bill was “a great step forward” for the American economy. The massive tax package is loaded with tax breaks for major corporations and America’s wealthiest citizens.

Thornberry called the tax overhaul a “chance to lower taxes, boost the economy, and bring back jobs to America.”

No Democrats voted for the tax package. Independent analysts expect the bill to increase the national debt by $1.5 trillion, and millions of Americans are likely to lose health coverage because of the measure.

Low and middle-income Americans will also receive tax cuts under the plan, though those cuts are set to expire over time, unlike the larger cuts for corporations and the wealthy.
