The Rev. Adam Hamilton, a Democrat and United Methodist pastor in the Kansas City-area, invited U.S. Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kansas, on Monday to debate him on the famous state fair stage in Hutchinson, where a gubernatorial debate is scheduled but a senatorial one isn’t, despite years of tradition.

While Hamilton is aiming for the middle, Marshall is firmly positioned on the right.

“Democrats have won many gubernatorial races in Kansas, but Senate races have eluded them: The last Democratic Senate win in Kansas was nearly a century ago, in 1932, which was Franklin Roosevelt’s first election,” wrote Kyle Kondik, the managing editor at Sabato’s Crystal Ball.

Marshall is running for re-election after a single term characterized by loyalty to President Donald Trump, pandemic critiques and questions about his primary residence.

The website appeared hours after a similar-looking one featuring Adam Hamilton’s name and photo at the top disappeared, which Schmidt denied being associated with.
