Council on Islamic-American Relations (CAIR)

Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit against the Muslim Brotherhood, the Council on American-Islamic Relations and its local Texas chapters, asking a court to shut them down. His office previously argued the local chapters were not part of Texas' foreign terrorist designation.

As the GOP and its factions debate what constitutes American identity, opposition to Islam has become a key campaign pillar for some Texas Republicans in statewide races and beyond.

A CAIR official blasted the Texas AG’s opinion, saying the law does not permit the comptroller to scrutinize Muslim schools because of their religious identity.

Texas Attorney General Paxton's filing comes in response to the Council on American-Islamic Relations Dallas-Fort Worth and Austin chapters' lawsuit against him and Gov. Greg Abbott last month.

It comes two days after Gov. Greg Abbott declared the two were foreign terrorist groups.

Gov. Greg Abbott filed the designation letter Tuesday.
