In Texas, a long-forgotten series of prison albums offers a rare way to hear what incarceration sounded like decades ago. Maurice Chammah, a staff writer at The Marshall Project is rescuing and reporting on the music recorded behind the walls.

The diversion center would focus on low-level offenders who have untreated mental illness, intellectual or developmental disorders, or substance use disorders. The goal would be to ease jail overcrowding while saving taxpayers money and improving outcomes for those who avoid jail.

The Prison Journalism Project found a willing partner in Kay Thompson, DOC's communications chief. The former reporter gave approval and support to the projects.
