High Plains Outdoors: Hunting For Eastern Wild Turkey

Luke Clayton
Travis Benes, manager of the Choctaw Hunting Lodge, setting up to call wild turkeys.

This week, Luke visits with his friend Travis Benes, manager of The Choctaw Hunting Lodge, in Southeastern Oklahoma and discusses a recent hunt for eastern wild turkey.

Luke has hunted Rio Grande turkeys for many years in Texas, but his experience with eastern "woods birds" is limited. Luke wasn't able to tag a bird on this hunt but he did have a couple of excellent opportunities, saw lots of turkeys, and learned a great deal about hunting them from Travis.

The majority of these veteran hunters’ "talk" is about turkey hunting, but Travis also discusses some awesome whitetail hunting opportunities available in the extensive Choctaw tribal lands. The lodge also offers a great fishing getaway in a fully-furnished cabin tucked away in the woods, with an awesome fishing lake nearby.
