I’m Hannes Zacharias from Lenexa for High Plains Public Radio, Radio Reader’s Book Club. The book is “Elevations: A Personal Exploration of the Arkansas River” by Max McCoy.As Dan Flores says “it is a Blue Highway kind of book about a swipe of America…a riverline biography”.The book encourages me to reflect on my similar two solo kayak trips on the “Ark,” -- one in 1976, the other in 2018.

Our author suggests that having access to clean and ample water is a basic human right and that saying so may start a fight in a place like Kansas. He cautions that “we are pumping the aquifer beneath our feet dry, and we must soon change our relationship to water or lose it forever.”

The River as a Thing Apart

I've been asked to say a few words about my book, "Elevations." It was published in 2018 by the University Press of Kansas and the subtitle is, "A Personal Exploration of the Ark River." That just about says it all.

From Twain’s sketch “A True Story,” Rachel says, "An' when I heah dat dey gwyne to sell us all off at oction in Richmon', oh de good gracious! I know what dat mean! . . . Dey put chains on us an' put us on a stan' . . . an' all de people stood aroun', crowds an' crowds.”

This is Mike Strong, in Hays, for HPPR, Radio Reader’s Book Club. The book is “Huckleberry Finn” by Mark Twain.My grandmother on my stepdad’s side was a farm wife who, with her husband, arrived from Germany in the early 1900’s. They established a farm south of Stanton, Nebraska.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was first banned a year after its publication in 1885. It is said to have been banned every year since. When informed of the censorship, author Mark Twain remarked that the controversy would only increase sales.

Hello, Radio Readers – I’m Jane Holwerda from Dodge City, Kansas. It’s great to be back with our Fall 2021 Book Read: “Rivers and Meandering Meanings.”In his genre-defying book Elevations, Max McCoy, who directs the Center for Great Plains Studies at Emporia State, recounts his journey – by kayak, on foot, and by Jeep—following the Arkansas River from its headwaters in Leadville, Colorado, through southwestern and on to southeastern Kansas.

Vagabond Huck Finn forms an unlikely friendship with a runaway slave allowing the work to explore their similarities as well as their differences in what could be considered a novela picaresca.
